Incheon Museum Park
Our proposal for the Incheon Museumpark is centred on redefining the way art is viewed, produced, and experienced. |
Through a series of urban gestures, architectural elements and landscape strategies, the museum space does not just situate within the confines of the controlled gallery environment but it connects to the city. From sunken courtyards, to elevated platforms and outdoor landscape trails, we designed a series of spaces both indoor and outdoor for the display of art and social gathering.
City-scale Park: We believe that the provision of a city-scale park is crucial for the site of the Incheon Museumpark. Surrounded by large podiums and high-rise mixed-use developments to the west and south of the site, and large industrial warehouse boxes to the north of the site, the city-scale park provides a vital green lung with differentiated landscape qualities for the wider district.
Continuous Ground: By limiting the footprint of the museum buildings by placing the exhibition galleries in the basement, the ground is freed up, allowing a continuous park-like landscape connecting to the green spine towards the mountain in the southeast.
Buildings as Pavilions: Tapping on the dominant typology of the missionary houses as a cluster of standalone volumes, we conceive the presence of the Museum and Art Museum as two large pavilions – one defined by a square translucent roof, while the other by a rectangular elevated slab – each covering a sunken courtyard. With the main exhibition rooms located in the basement and main entrance via the OCI building, these sheltered pavilions act as a civic park space on the ground.
A Palimpsest Approach: Our heritage response to the Incheon Museumpark is guided by the idea of palimpsest, which views the heritage of the site as a continually evolving process. Rather than freezing the history of site through the preservation of the OCI Building and the Missionary Houses, we propose to tap on the industrial and natural heritage of the site and reinterpre the site’s heritage through landscape, spatial and programmatic means.
